13. Driving behavior score

How does the platform calculate your driving score?

How do we measure your driving habits?

The Blackbox or Dongel are connected in your vehicles and through this we receive all kinds of interesting data from the vehicles. This data can be used to keep track of trips and check live locations, but we can also analyze driving behavior. Because we receive data from the hardware every second, we are very accurate when it comes to driving behavior. We pay attention to three parameters: speed, braking and cornering.

Each ride is rated for driving behavior with an average score. Aggressive braking, speeding and high cornering speed are included in the score. Each driver starts the ride at 100, but the more often one brakes hard or goes too fast through corners, the lower the score.

‍Accelerate

The acceleration score (100 - 0) is based on the rapid acceleration during the ride. If there is a speed increase of more than 15 km/h per second, you automatically see this reflected in the score. This easily moves to a worse score. If you stay below this acceleration, it will hardly affect the score.

Brakes

The brake score (100 - 0) is based on the number of hard brake actions during a ride. These brake actions can be measured by our accelerator / gyro module in the built-in unit. If we receive a certain G-force that indicates a (too) hard braking action, this is included in the data. The brake score is then calculated based on the number of kilometers the rider has traveled and the number of brake actions measured over this distance. We weigh the score over a distance of 10 kilometers. For example, if you have two brake actions during a 100 kilometer trip, your score will be 80.

‍Stationary

The idle score (100 - 0) represents the time the vehicle was stationary with the engine on during a trip. A score of 100% means that the vehicle did not idle the entire trip with the engine on.

Speed

The speed score (100 - 0) is the percentage of the trip that you did or did not exceed the speed limit on that stretch of road. A score of 100 means that you kept to the speed limit. A score lower than 100 means you sometimes drove too fast. We use HEREmaps, one of the largest map providers in the world, which is specialized on this piece of data (e.g. has all dynamic speeds mapped in the Netherlands). We get the actual speed from the car itself via the OBD. We do not calculate this based on GPS, but on the speed of your car at that moment. We also take into account the different road types. If you drive too fast in built-up areas, this is assessed more heavily than if you drive too fast on the freeway.

Red (terrible): The rider is driving 50% or faster than the maximum speed.

Orange (bad): The rider is driving 25% to 50% faster than the maximum speed.

Yellow (moderate): The rider is driving 25% or faster than the maximum speed.

Blue (good): The rider neatly adheres to the speed limit.

The speed graph can be found at the bottom of your screen. This graph shows the maximum speed (red line) and your own speed (blue line) and revolutions per minute (yellow line) during your trip. Move your mouse over the driven route to see the exact speed!

So on the above parameters you get all kinds of scores (per trip). These scores are eventually included in the average score of that trip / day / week / month and so on. The average score is calculated using the following formula: Speed (50%), Braking (15%), Acceleration (15%), Idling (10%) and Cornering (10%).

EXTRA TIP: You can print a report of the row scores at the "reports" icon.
